For the Department of the Navy, IAI developed TIFGEN, the Technical Information File Generator. TIFGEN is a workstation-based project tracking system that spans otherwise incompatible information systems environments at eight Navy shipyards. The overhaul of a Navy vessel requires hundreds of thousands of man-hours of labor and thousands more of planning. The Navy's goal has been to use technology to optimize work scheduling to minimize bottlenecks. The key to the scheduling process is the Technical Information File, containing all process, quality control, material, and certification information for a ship overhaul task. Working under contract to the Naval Sea Systems Command, IAI was assigned the task of creating TIFGEN as an automated tool to group and schedule tasks. IAI used off-the-shelf software within industry-standard computing environments. TIFGEN work stations share information through standard query language relational databases using standard SQL database servers.
